Alerts

Definition of 'Alerts'

Alerts are a service provided by some, but not all credit reference agencies that notifies consumers of changes made to credit reports.

This is often a paid-for service. If you decide to use this service, choose one that offers customisable alerts, as otherwise, if you are credit active, you will be plagued by notification of minor changes, including in some cases, alerts about you checking your own credit report.

We don't think paying extra for alerts of changes on your credit report are good value for money. This is because the information on credit reports is updated at various intervals, and the account history part of your credit report is updated only once a month.

It makes more sense to us to check your credit report on a monthly basis instead, or just before you apply for credit. Otherwise, alerts can cause unnecessary anxiety, clutter up your inbox and you'll automatically ignore them once the novelty has worn off.
