Lease companies to be reviewed for cost regulation

Should a regular 7kg washing machine cost you a. $700 or b. $2175? Your answer doesn’t depend, as you might think, on the make, model or finish of the machine but instead on whether you’ve bought it or leased it.

It’s on this basis that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has called for a cap on high interest rates charged by lease companies. With caps on payday loans, you might think that there are caps on interest charged by other lenders and lessors.

Unfortunately, whilst some of the poorest in society are protected against high payday loan charges, the same is not true of lease companies. ASIC found that the average cost for dole recipients leasing household goods was up to eight times what it wou .....

More employment does not mean better prospects

More of us are working than ever, but according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, it doesn’t follow that more of us are owning our own homes.

There were 9.4m Australians in employment last year, up 4% on two decades ago. But over the same period homeownership has dropped, with the number owning their home outright falling from 42% in 1994-95 to 31% in 2011-12. The number of homeless people has also increased by 4% since 2012.

The Australian dream of owning a little piece of the Lucky Country is fading, with an increasingly expensive property market to blame for the rise in people renting – rising from 18% twenty years ago to 25% in 2011-12. Since then that figure is expected to have risen further.
