Federal Senate passes new credit card surcharge laws

Credit cards may no longer be subject to excessive surcharging, following new legislation passed by the Federal Senate to clamp down on the issue. But fears still remain that as opposed to saving Australian consumers, it could have the opposite effect.

The legislation passed by the Senate gives Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) the ability to fine companies who place surcharges of up to 1000% above the real cost of processing credit card payments, according to figures confirmed by the consumer group Choice.

Senate inquiry calls - for changes to minimum repayments and credit card switching

A six-month inquiry into credit card usage performed by a senate committee has found that credit card users need to have the ability to change their providers more easily than is currently the case, as well as setting minimum monthly repayments.

The Labour and Coalition senators agreed on these two changes, released in the inquiry report, but views differed on other possible changes proffered in the inquiry.

As it stands, the inquiry felt that the banks need to take better care of their customers who were struggling to meet repayments, as well as finding ways to reduce the use of credit cards as long-term credit extension facilities.
